Today's most popular question, 'why are we here?'
You ask it through the already turbulent, hormone-infested years of middle and high school. You start asking in rapid succession as you cram through college. One year into your first job, the question comes to haunt you again. Then it finds a comfortable rhythm of echoing in and out of your mind every six months or so. The number of years of this rhythm becomes lost to us, until you wake up and you're 75, retired with full pension, married to the spouse of your dreams, and looking forward to the next visit from your bouncing grandchildren.
And you still ask, 'why am I here?'
So, we- Christians, atheists, Muslims, and Buddhists alike- dwell on the question of our stance in the world. Dwell to the point of reaching a dark conclusion; 'If I haven't figured it out my reason for living by now, I never will. I'm useless.'
I've reached this dark hole before. I have asked 'Why am I here?'. And hearing nothing definite, I make my own answer. 'I have nothing to offer. I'm useless.'
Several year further into my faith, I have scratched out that lie, remembering the one constant in God, my Father.
PURPOSE: An intended or result, end, aim, or goal... the reason for which something exists or is done, made, used, etc...
In the NIV translation of the Bible, 'purpose' appears 52 times between the books of Exodus and Revelation. The majority of these 'purpose passages' state the absolute purpose that God has established over everything. Psalm 33 says it best;
'But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever,
the purposes of His heart through all generations.'
(verse 11)
God's purpose, his intended result, has always been us. No man, woman, elder, or child is here without a reason for existing. That's not how God operates; He makes use of everything... and everyone.
So, next time you've convinced yourself that your purpose in life doesn't exist... remind yourself that YOU'RE WRONG.
My words can't offer you a direct answer to your purpose in this life. But they can promise that such purpose has existed since the day you were born.
'"For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord.
"Plans that will prosper you and not harm you.
Plans to give you hope and a future."'
~Jeremiah 29:11~
